Hash Terminology
Click
here to see this page in Japanese. The basis for
this list was taken from the guidebook of the Tokyo Ladies Hash
House Harriers.
Useful Terms
- A to B
- A run which starts at one location and ends at another. The hare is responsible for
getting people's stuff to the finish.
- Are You?
- Call to locate Hashers hunting for the correct trail.

- Beer
- A drink, without which, the average Hasher would give up Hashing altogether.
- BT
- A sign which indicates you are going the wrong way, go back to the last Check Point.
- Checkback
- A sign which indicates one should go back to the last arrow or Intersection and try some
other direction.
- Checking
- A response to "Are You?", indicating that the trail from the check hasn't been
found yet.
- Checkpoint
- The place where the pack must look for the trail. Checkpoints are placed at
intersections so that hashers must go down several roads and encounter numerous checkbacks
before finding the correct trail. One should not call "On On" after a checkpoint
unless one actually sees the words "On On" written on the ground.
- Down-Down
- Also known in America as a "Chug" or in Japan as an "Ikki". The beer
administered by Ms. Management at the On-On to new runners and to hashers who deserve one.
Accompanied by a song
- False Trail
- Just that -- the wrong way!
- Hare
- The unfortunate Hasher whose turn it was to set the run.
- Hareline
- Schedule of Hares and the runs which they should set.
- Hash Trash
- Weekly newsletter sent to Hashers with details of the next run.
- Interhash
- A periodic gathering of hashers from a variety of locales, often lasting for multiple
days. Attendees will usually receive a T-shirt.
- Live Run
- In a live run the hare marks the trail while being pursued by the pack. If caught
(snared) by the other Hashers, the hare suffers great shame, public humiliation, and most
likely several down-downs.
- Looking
- A response to "Are You?", indicating that the pack is rather lost.
- Mystery Whip
- A person selected by (the hare?) to watch the runners and note the interesting points of
the runs. At the On-On, the Mystery Whip assigns down-downs to those who deserve them and
those who don't deserve them but whom the Mystery Whip feels like victimizing. The Whip's
identity is of course kept secret until the On-On; hence the word "Mystery".
- On-down, -in, -left, -over, -right, -up
- Hash directions.
- On-chalk, On-flour
- A call indicating that someone has actually seen the chalk or flour marks.
- On-On
- Most important Hash word after beer. Shouted when the correct trail is found.
Also refers to the after-run hogout.
- Pack
- Collective noun referring to the runners.
- Snare
- Occasionally a live hare will suffer the ignominious fate of being caught by a member of
the pack. This known as "snaring" the hare and is a cause for great shame (and
multiple Down-Downs).
- Wait for the Pack
- Call to stop and wait for all runners to arrive. Often used at long stoplights
and very short checks.
